Pantech Corporation recently inked a technology collaboration agreement with ContentGuard Holdings, a subsidiary of Pendrell Corporation. ContentGuard is an inventor, developer and licensor of digital rights management (DRM) and related content distribution patents and technologies.
“As one of the world’s leading mobile wireless device manufacturers, Pantech values the opportunity to collaborate with Pendrell to enhance the content experience utilizing ContentGuard’s foundational digital rights management technologies,” said Chadong Hwang, leader of the IP strategy team for Pantech.
Pantech, a mobile handset maker in Korea, specializes in innovative handset designs as well as technologies that are used widely in the mobile phone and tablet industry.
This new agreement allows the parties to leverage their competencies to enhance the content experience on Pantech phones and tablets. Pantech will also get access to ContentGuard’s digital rights management (DRM) technologies for the next five years.
Mario Obeidat, vice president of licensing for Pendrell, said that “with the explosive adoption of wireless devices that have a primary purpose of delivering a rich content experience, the need to protect the rights of content owners while at the same time giving consumers access to an unprecedented selection of digital content has never been greater.”

Recently, Pantech the maker of the Burst smartphone and the Element tablet, both exclusive to AT&T, received an update to version 4.0 of Google’s Android (News - Alert) OS. Known as Ice Cream Sandwich, which will help deliver enhanced performance and usability features to both Pantech devices. The features that will be enhanced include customization tools, user interface and photo capturing and communication functions, said officials.
The Pantech Burst is a fully featured 4G LTE (News - Alert) smartphone and comes with a four-inch Super AMOLED display and 1.5 GHz dual-core processor.
The ICS update will improve the user interface to the phone, providing updated lock screens, Quick Settings, Detail Settings and improved multitasking and notifications. Recent Apps button for fast app switching, improved browsing and enriched camera functionality are other features.
